THREE AWESOME COSTUMES FOR BOOK WEEK

Majura Park Shopping Centre
Majura Park Shopping Centre | 3 months ago

It’s almost that time of year – when kids go deep into the pages of their favourite storybook and bring their much-loved characters to life. (And when your Facebook feed is flooded with cute Book Week pics).

But this year’s ‘Reading is my superpower’ theme doesn’t have to be strictly about Iron Man and Captain Marvel costumes.

We’ve spent some seriously fun research time bringing you the best of the best Book Week costumes available right here at Majura Park.

1. Betty Goes Bananas by Steve Antony

When it comes to temper tantrums, Betty the gorilla is world-famous. She’s the perfect costume option for those in Kindergarten, and Years 1 and 2.

Shopping list

Betty Goes Bananas book, Book Grocer, $7
Gorilla mask, Chilada, $12.95
Pink dress, Big W, $9
Pink bow, Big W, $3
Grey knitted beanie, Big W, $5
Costume total $36.95

2. Possum Magic by Mem Fox

This gorgeous classic makes for a brilliant all-Australian costume. Buy a Hush puppet from The Teddy Bear Shop and take her on an adventure through our nation’s favourite dishes, from pavlova to Vegemite.

Thinking outside the box for a Book Week costume means scouring the mens and womens pajama aisles – as well as the kids – and using bits and pieces from different shops mixed with what you might have at home. You’ll be surprised what you can find that can make a totally unique costume.

Shopping list

Possum Magic book, Big W, $10
Possum puppet, The Teddy Bear Shop, $60
Leaf top and pants, Big W, $27
Stars cut from manila folders from Big W, $5
Costume total $102

3. Oompa Loompa from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

Okay, it’s no secret that here at Majura Park we’re obsessed with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – how awesome was our Willy Wonka Easter hat option? – so of course we had to include at least one character from the book.

Using props, like the Gobstoppers in this outfit, adds an extra layer of magic to your Book Week costume.

Special note for this one: make sure you spray the green hairspray outside (we learnt this lesson the hard way!)

Shopping list

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book, Big W, $12
Striped overalls, Big W, $15
Red T-shirt, Big W, $5
